WPSU StoryCorps Oral History Project to Visit DuBois Public Library

10/13/2012

WPSU-FM will host StoryCorps at the DuBois Public Library to record stories from local residents

October 1, 2012 – WPSU-FM, central Pennsylvania’s NPR affiliate, invites DuBois residents to record an interview conversation with a friend or loved one. The person could be someone with an interesting story, someone who influenced them, or perhaps someone who’s a part of local history. The conversation will be preserved for others to hear and enjoy as part of a local version of the national StoryCorps project. The project records extraordinary stories of ordinary people, preserving and sharing the stories of Americans from all backgrounds and beliefs.

Participants should come with questions, but a WPSU StoryCorps facilitator will be there to guide participants through the interview process. At the end of each 40-minute recording session, participants receive a complimentary CD copy of their interview. Participant interviews will air in January 2013 on WPSU-FM and will be posted on the WPSU StoryCorps web page.

WPSU-FM will visit DuBois October 18, 19 and 20 to help residents record their stories. Recordings will take place during library hours in the meeting room in the DuBois Public Library in DuBois, Pa. Taking part is free, but participants must schedule an appointment in advance. Appointments will be scheduled at wpsu.org/storycorps or by calling Emily Reddy at (814) 863-4233.

Founded in 2003 by award-winning documentary producer and MacArthur “Genius” Grant recipient Dave Isay, StoryCorps aims to create a growing portrait of who we are as Americans. By traveling to every corner of the country, the national StoryCorps project currently has one of the largest collections of American voices ever gathered, with interviews collected from more than 60,000 Americans in all 50 states.

“StoryCorps tells the true American story—that we are a people defined by small acts of courage, kindness and heroism. Each interview reminds people that their lives matter and will not be forgotten,” said Isay. “By strengthening connections between people and building an archive that reflects the rich diversity of American voices, we hope to build StoryCorps into an enduring institution that will touch the lives of every American family.”

"We are thrilled to be able to continue the StoryCorps project at a local level," said Greg Petersen, director of programming services for Penn State Public Broadcasting. "Storytelling is at the very core of public radio and these conversations will remind us of the importance of listening to and learning from those around us. It celebrates our shared humanity."
