Library is Digging Deep into Reading!

7/6/2013

We are just days away from the Fourth of July and I am sure many parents are hearing that dreaded phrase, “I’m bored!”  With school out for the summer, it does not take kids long to run out of fun things to do, especially on rainy days.  As adults, we too went through this phase once, but now we are in the grown-up world of working citizens and we treasure those few days that allow us to stay home and relax.  “Bored” is no longer a word in our vocabulary, and with the help of the DuBois Public Library, you can also achieve the same result for your children.
The children’s library is a busy place with kids reading to the center of the earth!  Each book that is logged gets us 4,000 feet closer.  Our goal is to read 5,240 books by the end of July!  You can see our progress by checking the poster of the earth’s core in the children’s department.
Our June programs may be at an end, but we still have all of July with many more fun programs to enjoy.  Summer Science with Sean has been very popular with children five and up.  On July 11th and 25th, kids will learn about wetlands and decomposing trees and plants, and why they are important to the cycle of life.  We offer two time slots for you to choose from, 10:30 a.m. or 6:00 p.m.  Registration is required so stop in or call us!
A puppeteer will be visiting us on July 9th at 4:00 p.m. and all families are invited to join in the fun!  Adam Swartz will have parents and children laughing and excited to make their own puppet show!  Join us for an historical presentation on July 16th, at 6:00 p.m.  Archeologist, Ken Burkett, will be using hands-on props to teach kids all about life for Pennsylvania’s earliest inhabitants.  Registration is not required and everyone is invited to join us for these spectacular programs!
Every week, in our children’s department, we have fun activities for kids of all ages.  Every Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. is storytime!  Afterwards, the children can have fun with hands-on science activities or stop at the craft table.  These two stations are changing every week, so don’t miss out!
Do you find that your child is a shy reader?  That’s no problem!  This summer we have a special guest visiting us weekly.  He is a book bunny, owned by Gabrielle Heinrichs, that loves to hear children reading to him!  The book bunny will sit quietly and listen to any child, helping them to become confident readers.  Even if you don’t stop by to read to the bunny, he would still enjoy a visit from you.  The book bunny visits at a different time each week so give us a call to see when he is stopping next!
The library has some fun programs for teens too!  The week of July8th-13th, will be art week.  We would love for you to bring us your creations so that we can show them off!  You even have the option of stopping by to pick up materials to help you get started.
Vegetarian and vegan diets have become very popular in the past several years.  So whether you are already practicing the diet or are thinking about it, join us for our program.  This event is geared towards teens and will provide recipes and helpful information to help you get started.  We will have cooking demonstrations to show how easy the meals are to make and just how tasty they can be!  Join us at 5:30 p.m. on July 18th, for a fun and tasty program!
Summer Reading will wrap up on July 31st with a day spent at Parker Dam State Park!  Everyone is invited to this day long event, which will include games, activities, hiking, food, and an evening concert to end the day with folksinger, Ed McDade.  Our Library in the Mountains day was a huge hit last year, so grab your family and friends and make the day a blast!  More details will be coming, along with registration, so call us or check our Facebook page to stay up-to-date!
Summer Reading is busy time at the library and we enjoy seeing everyone having fun and reading!  If you have any questions, you are always welcome to call us at 814-371-5930, visit our website, www.duboispubliclibrary.org, or check out our Facebook page.  We always welcome new friends!
